Chocolat’s Career Journey
Many K-pop idol groups debut in the Korean music industry. Some of them have their own uniqueness, such as the female idol group called Chocolat which turned out to be dominated by members who are not of Korean descent or foreign blood. Debuting in 2011 under Paramount Music, Chocolat consisted of 5 members who have different blood ancestry. The name Chocolat itself means that its members are able to represent the variations and colors of chocolate. Of the 5 members, only two are of pure Korean blood, Min Soa and Jaeyoon. The other three members, namely Melanie, Tia, and Juliane, are mixed with Korean and American blood. The leader, Min Soa, was born and raised in Korea before finally moving to Australia to continue her studies. The maknae or the youngest member, Melanie, was born in Korea, but then she moved and grew up in Hawaii. Her mother is a native Korean and her father is an American soldier who was stationed in Korea before the two got married. Born in California, Tia is of Korean, German, and Puerto Rican descent drawn from her father’s blood. Tia’s father was also an American soldier before finally marrying his wife who is of native Korean descent. Just like the other Korean-American members, Juliane’s father was also an American soldier. Juliane was born in Korea, but she grew up in Texas for a while before finally returning to Korea to debut with Chocolat. Then, there is Jaeyoon who is Korean and only appeared during her debut during Syndrome‘s promotions. There is no official statement from their agency as to why Jaeyoon suddenly did not continue her promotions after Syndrome‘s era. Since debuting in 2011, Chocolat released several singles such as Syndrome, I Like It, One More Day, until the latest single that was released in 2013 titled Black Tinkerbell. In 2017, Chocolat was disbanded without any official statement from their agency after Chocolat’s Tia left the group on February 3, 2017. Chocolat’s Melanie who was interviewed by the website Kpopalypse confirmed the group’s disbandment news.
