We are going to talk about TWICE’s journey from debut to the present day. Are there any of you out there who still don’t know who are TWICE? TWICE is a South Korean girl group formed by JYP Entertainment through the 2015 reality show Sixteen. The group is composed of nine members, such as Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu. The group debuted on October 20th, 2015, with the extended play The Story Begins. Now that you guys already know a little information about them, let us get to the main topic to get to know their best songs and notable comebacks. 2015
According to some portal news, on February 11th, 2015, Park Jin-young (or people have known him as JYP) announced that the line-up of JYPE’s upcoming seven-member girl group would be decided through Sixteen, a competition survival show that would air on Mnet later that year. The show began on May 5th and ended with Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, and Chaeyoung as the seven Twice members. Park Jin-young then announced that he would be increasing the size of the group from seven members to nine by adding Tzuyu, who was the “audience’s pick” since she was the most popular contestant by the show’s end, and Momo, who was added by Park himself since he felt the group needed someone with Momo’s performance abilities.
Like Ooh-Ahh (Ooh-Ahh하게)
“Like Ooh-Ahh” was released on October 7th, 2015. It was announced by JYP Entertainment via SNS that the group would debut with the extended play (EP) The Story Begins and a single track. The track was described as a “color pop” dance track with elements of hip-hop, rock, and R&B. According to SOOMPI, “Like OOH-AHH” features a quirky music video, with the girls showing off their fun choreography and catchy melody amidst a hoard of zombies. With their heartfelt lyrics about wanting to fall in love, TWICE end up solving the apocalypse by making the zombies feel “like ooh-ahh.” The composition team included Black Eyed Pilseung, known for composing successful releases such as Miss A’s “Only You.” The album and the song’s music video were released on October 20th, 2015. The group held a live showcase the same day, where they performed all the tracks from the EP. The Music Video hit 50 million views on YouTube within five months of their debut and became one of the most-viewed debut music videos for any K-Pop group. Let’s check out their Music Video below.
2016
In this year, TWICE’s second EP, Page Two, was released on April 25th, 2016. The album includes the singles “Cheer Up,” “Precious Love” (a remake of Park Ji-yoon’s 1998 hit), and “I’m Gonna Be a Star,” which served as the theme song for Sixteen. There are seven tracks in total for the Page Two album, with the seventh song only available on the physical disc. The album comes in two cover versions with a photobook, garland, lenticular card and folder, photo cards, and posters. 30,000 copies will have the package sleeve designed by member Chaeyoung and a special TWICE poster and sticker. And in August, Page Two had sold over 150,000 copies, making Twice the first girl group having a sales record of more than 100,000 units that year. After that, in celebration of Twice’s first anniversary since debut, on October 20th, the group unveiled their new song “One in a Million” from their upcoming third EP, Twicecoaster: Lane 1. Twicecoaster: Lane 1 and the music video of the pop-dance song “TT” were released online on October 24th.
Cheer Up
“Cheer Up” is the title of TWICE’s Music Video of their comeback in 2016. This song is a color pop dance track with lyrics by Sam Lewis, composition by Black Eyed Pilseung, and arrangement by Rado. The music video features the members in various movie situations that range from action to romance. According to SOOMPI, on July 31st, “Cheer Up” notably marked third place the last two days on the Genie and Monkey3 music charts, solidifying its impressively long run. Earlier that week, the song found itself making history by climbing into the top five of several music charts, including but not limited to MelOn, Mnet, and Naver Music. On November 19th, 2016, Twice’s “Cheer Up” won Song of the Year at the 8th Melon Music Awards. It was then followed by another Song of the Year award at the 18th Mnet Asian Music Awards on December 2nd.
TT
“TT” is another comeback from TWICE that has the concept adorable Halloween-inspired for their Music Video. “TT” was released along with their mini-album Twicecoaster: Lane 1 on October 24th of 2016. “TT” became the fastest K-Pop group MV to reach 250 million views, and is the group’s first music video to do so in August 2017. It is also the only K-Pop girl group music video to reach the milestone, as BIGBANG is the only other K-Pop group that has reached that number of views on a music video (for “Fantastic Baby” and “BANG BANG BANG”), according to SOOMPI.
2017
On January 10th, 2017, JYP Entertainment announced Twice’s first solo concert tour within just a year and four months after debuting in October 2015. The three-day sold-out concert titled Twice 1st Tour: Twiceland – The Opening was held on February 17–19 at the SK Olympic Handball Gymnasium. After that, Twice released a special album on February 20th titled Twicecoaster: Lane 2, along with its lead single, “Knock Knock.” It is the reissue of Twicecoaster: Lane 1. And then, finally, on October 30th, 2017, Twice released their first full-length Korean album, Twicetagram, with its lead single titled “Likey.” The music video for the song was filmed in Canada in early September.
