Sardool Sikander was a Punjabi singer associated with Punjabi-language folk and pop music, who made his first appearances on radio and television in the early 1980s with his introductory album, “Roadways Di Laari”. He also acted in some Punjabi language films, like Jagga Daku. Sardool’s father, the late Sagar Mastana, was a famous tabla player who invented a special type of tabla that was played with a thin bamboo stick. Sardool was married to Amar Noorie. Born in the Kheri Naudh Singh in district Fatehgarh Sahib, he belonged to the Patiala Gharana of music. Sardool had 27 albums to his credit. His work has been included in over 50 derivative albums from all over the world. His album ‘Husna De Malko’ released in 1991 sold 5.1 million copies worldwide and is still selling. Sikander was undergoing treatment for various medical issues including kidney damage, uncontrolled diabetes, and multi-organ failure. In 2016, Sikander had undergone a renal transplant after his wife Amar Noorie, also an accomplished artiste, had donated a kidney to him. He was also suffering from a heart ailment for many years. Last year in December, Sikander had tested positive for Covid-19, but had recovered. After some days, in January 2021, he had developed post-Covid complications and had to be admitted at Fortis Hospital in Mohali where he breathed his last. He died on 24 February 2021, at the age of 60 at Fortis Hospital Mohali in Chandigarh and survived by his two sons and wife Amar Noorie. Coming from a humble background, Sikander, who was born at Kheri Naudh Singh, Fatehgarh Sahib, rose to a professional high with ‘Roadways Di Laari’. He had a good command of classical, folk, religious and playback singing. Sikander enjoyed success on radio, television and live shows. ‘Ek Charkha Gali De Vich, Maula, Nanak Naam Chardi Kalah’ are some of his famous songs. One of his bestselling albums is ‘Husna De Malko’ (1991) that has sold 5.1 million copies worldwide and counting. He also acted in Punjabi films like ‘Police in Pollywood’ and ‘Jagga Daku’. A melodious singer, Sikander was a humble soul. He revered his guru Charanjit Ahuja. Sikander was married to actor-singer Amar Noorie. He is survived by his wife and sons – Sarang Sikander and Alaap Sikander – both of them are carrying forward their musical lineage. His musical legacy would survive in music lovers across generations.
