From Rania To BP Rania
RaNia (shortened from Regeneration Idol of Asia) is a Korean pop girl-group that debuted in 2011 under DR Music, and is produced by Teddy Riley. The group consisted of members from Thailand, China, and Korea who were fluent in English, Japanese, Chinese, and Thai, however after Sarah, YiJo, and Joy left, they became a full Korean group until the addition of African-American rapper Alexandra and Chinese vocalist Ttabo. As of May 2016, all the original members had left the group, with a brief reappearance from former leader and original member Saem (now Yina) from the end of 2016 to June 2017. They officially changed their name from RaNia to “BP RaNia” for their Start A Fire comeback, but after their Refresh 7th release they changed their name back to RaNia.
Interaction Between Alex and Other BP RANIA Members
When she was in the group she was very friendly to other members and they were best friends ever since. But after she departed, they looked rare to go around.
How Did the Agency Treat Alex?
In a statement posted on BP RaNia’s Facebook account, DR Music announced that Alexandra is no longer a member of the girl-group. The announcement was shared on August 19 and reads, “Dear fans, BP RaNia is finally back. First of all, we would like to say thank you for supporting us no matter what. We are deeply appreciative. Recently, there have been issue related to racism, boycotting, petition, etc., on our official SNS accounts. We have noticed that many fans have been worried because of these issues.”
Does She Feel Racism While Living in Korea?
“If there is one thing I learned about racism, it is to try and teach instead of getting hurt and angry.” Thats’s the thing she said about her feelings during her time in Korea, where she has felt discrimination and racism. She titled it: “I’m Alex Reid, the first non-Asian/black woman in a K-pop group. Ask me anything!” Her intro: “Being a black woman in a K-pop group was hard. Now that I’m no longer a member, I can answer some of your questions. I’ll be here for about 1.5 hours.” She promised to answer fans’ questions as best she could. Reddit user, miabean4 asked Alex if she experienced any racism while in Korea. To which Alex replied, “Yes.” She continued on to say, “If there is one thing I learned about racism, it is to try and teach instead of getting hurt and angry. Before, I had no gauge on what the world knew and didn’t know about right and wrong when it came to matters of race or cultural appropriation. Any racism used to just make me sad and then hostile. I can’t get mad at ignorance anymore. Sometimes, people just do not know.”
